My 5 vocal health remedies for singers + one thing to avoid

This week I’ve been unwell and haven’t been able to teach because I’ve had no voice. I’ve been sad about it because I have missed seeing my vocal students, but I know that the best thing I can do is to rest & recover.

Here are my 5 vocal rehabilitation weapons & one BIG no-no:

1. Water & lots of it! I’m trying to drink at least 1.5lt a day.

2. Steam Inhaler so many benefits- it directly hydrates your vocal folds, decreases roughness & hoarseness. Plus it’s like a spa session for your throat!

3. SOVT straw phonation. I’ve been doing VERY gently vocal warmups as complete vocal rest is not recommended these days for vocal rehabilitation.

4. Sleep listening to my body and having naps when needed.

5. Healthy food- get some vegetables into you! My go to is always chicken soup

6. As hard as it is, the avoid coughing/throat clearing if you can!

It’s massively high impact & can cause swelling on the vocal folds. Coughing causes our body create more mucus to protect the vocal folds, which makes us want to cough more. A horrible cycle to get into. There are other ways to help!

For now, I’m off to binge some Netflix, have some soup and then maybe a nap.

Now of course, all of these remedies will work in varying degrees on each person as we are all different- none of these are a magic pill; but doing even one will honour your body and the process to bring it back to health.
